Roman portraits
« on: April 11, 2005, 12:24:15 pm »
It is rather amusing to  aline  a sequence of portraits of the same empror on  good grade coins.
Unfortunately, I have only a few suitable sequences. One of them  is  of Gallienus.
I hope that this experiment leads to some toughts about Roman art.

It seems that there are no interest to this experiment. I tried again with helmeted probus removing
colors.

Yes, there is interest in such experiments. Remember that not everyone is on the French time! ;D

I've been working on a page with Aurelian portraits, and on a page of Probus to aid in teaching style of different mints. When these will be done, time will tell.

I wish Aurelian would be as easy to tell apart as Probus, because some of his coins are giving me a headache as to which mint they came from.

That's an interesting Ticinum coin with the large helmet. Yet they still chopped off the top of the emperor's skull! That always bothers me on Roman coins!

I agree. It is not that there isn't interest in such experiments. I am working on a page for my website too to try and aid with the identification of Probus busts, using some examples from my collection. It helps with determining the differences in style that are introduced between mints and also introduced over the different emissions within the same mint. Determining style differences is something that many people find difficult due to lack of exposure to the different types.

The Gallienus images above are interesting to me in an abstract manner but would be of much more value to me if they were accompanied by information relating to whether they are from the same mint, emission etc.

Regards,
Martin

I am more interested in the general imression of  combined images rather in an analysis of syles
which is, of course, very importnant.

Well, before we start any further discussion, thanks for giving me an idea! I now have a wonderful set of bookmarks with Roman emperor's on them! And each bookmark is in the right emperor's book. :D

What we can see here in your coin collages, is that even before Diocletian's ideological reforms, what is depicted is not so much the emperor himself, as the idea of the emperor. And an idea of the emperor tailored to the regional tastes. Lugdunum Probus is not the Ticinum Probus, or one from Tripolis.

I yet have to see a Lugdunum Probus that resembles his marble bust, but such coins are certainly available from Rome, Ticinum or Siscia.

Such assemblages have a lot to teach us, in many ways.

Of course it'd be great to see even longer ones.

I wonder  why there are not a lot of  marble busts  of the great  emperor Probus.
Or I am probably bady informed?
Just a thought:  The marble portaits were, of couse, a  mean for propaganda.
Probus was vlever enough that coins  is a better  one.

Well, you know... during the many rebellions in the reign of Probus there were some heavy casualties in statuary. This is also why a lot of the inscriptions honouring him were chiseled out. There aren't that many full ones extant.

There's another marble bust, which is allegedly of Probus, but it seems to be more of a Severan era bust than one from the later part of the 3rd century. There are two bronze busts at the museum in Brescia which allegedly are of Probus, but there's disagreement about the attribution. The only confirmed Probus I know of is the one in the Capitoline Museum.

You have noticed, no doubt, that we aren't swamped by marble (or any other kind)  busts of Carus et sui.

Anything other than this for Numerian? The attribution of which is hotly disputed, in any case:

Now 4 Tacit coins  in a line. The first one is of Lugdunum mint. Apparently,  the efigies have
strong individual features.

The Aurelelian  is not represented by a homogeneous sample.

Aurelelian  is not represented by a homogeneous sample.

I think Aurelian has the most varied portraiture. A person not familiar with his coinage would not realize that they were looking at the "same" person.
The range is amazing even if we exclude the early Claudius portraits.

I've always thought that Constantine I and his various hairstyles are rather interesting. Maybe Chip can help out - Lord knows he has enough Campgates! ;D(Just kiddin' Chip---but it would be kind of cool!) Someone's probably done it by now. Maybe we can submit pics of some of our favorite Constantine I hairstyles. Here are two of my favorites...

This is a very interesting thread.  Here's portrait variation within a single mint (what a surprise).

The most spectacular  sequences are those where the coins are more or less of the same grades, the photos are done with the same light and processed similarly. Here is Philip:

Nice line-up Chip. Curious if the second one from the left, top row is from Antioch. Same hairstyle as mine.

No. It is from Arles. Here is the reverse. But the first coin in the second row is from Antioch.

Ave!

Here's a few Licinius II Portraits from my pathetic collection, all holding Victory on Orb. No progression as to age as he was executed by Constantine I when he was what, only fourteen years old?

The middle photo on the lower row, the one with thr sky-jump nose, leads me to wonder if he was very distantly related to the late Bob Hope::)
