Sicilian dinero. James I or Fridrich III?
« on: May 08, 2021, 02:29:10 am »
Can't determine, is it dinero of James I or Fridrich III

These are dineros produced in Messina during the reign of Giacomo 1 and Federico 3. The first - with the legend IAC DEI GRA / REX SICILIE (Spahr 17-21, MEC 769-70), the second - with the legend FRI T DEI GRA / REX SICILIE (Spahr 34-48, MEC 780-782). Unfortunately, I only see DEI GRA and REX SICILIE here. And I can't tell if the first two letters in the legend on the portrait side are part of FR or IA

Hi MS9,

The legends on your coin aren't clear. I don't know if a definitive determination can ever be made.

I have an example of the James I coin (last coin):

The legends on my example aren't that clear either.
