Tiny silver Greek coin
« on: April 16, 2021, 05:47:10 pm »
This little beauty came in a lot of Greek silver fractions from a Forvm auction a while ago. It is 4.0 mm and 0.11 g. Any help with an ID is most appreciated.

Cheers,
Tim

It will be a lot more fun if you at least guess what you have when you post these.

There are only a few candidates for coins this small.  What about
https://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces148386.html

If you search for Phokaia Tetartemorion or Hemitetartemorion you will find a few more examples, that have reverses a bit more like yours.

I could be way-off base, but this is what I think is most likely based on your pics.

Hi,

It's difficult photographing such small pieces and then seeing them blown up. Is it an eagle head left on the obverse? If so it could well be from Kyme (sometimes written Cyme) in Aeolis.

Mauseus

Thank you, esnible, mauseus, and Molinari for the responses. I have been stumped by the obverse for months. For a while I was convinced it was an eagle's head from Kyme, but I couldn't find any examples quite as small. Then, I thought maybe it was a ram's head from Troas, but that's not convincing either. I will definitely check into the Phokaia coins and take a good look at the coin in hand to see if there might be a match.

In the meantime, I'll welcome any other ideas and will happily investigate them. These little coins are fun, if not a little maddening.  :)

Cheers,
Tim

Looks like a griffin's head to me. Teos?

edit:
(Later that same night...)
I dunno, maybe it is an eagle.

In my eyes it is one of this series of unknown origin with a corinthian helmet on the obverse and an incuse punch on the reverse:
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4902100

There exist also larger denominations:
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7835504  (obol)
https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7679504  (hemiobol)

You find a (very) short discussion of these types in Otto Mørkholm, "Une trouvaille de monnaies Grecques archaiques", SNR 50, 1971:

Altamura, I think you are right. I can see the helmet and, indeed, have an example of it in my Greek gallery on here.

Hi,

This is my example with the description I have given it:

AR Obol
480-450 BC
O - Helmet to left
R - Quadripartite incuse square
SNG Kayhan 743 (Ionia or Karia); Rosen 109 (Skione in Macedon); SNG Arikantürk 664-5 (Neandria in Troas?)

Mauseus
