Harness mounts?
« on: April 16, 2021, 10:00:31 am »
Hello,

These 2 very ornated mounts must have looked quite flashy in their original state. The size of them makes me believe they were applied to horse harness.

The cruciform one is 1,7x1,7cm and the disk is 1,8cmx1,8cm.

Cheers  +++

Very nice.  I agree both are likely horse harness

I have one of the round but have only seen the cruciform in books.

I think i've seen an example of the pdf you've send me where these disk types were worn by soldiers but due to their size it probably didn't belong there. Apron might be a possibility but I feel like most things are horse harness in the end. Probably used by wealthy civilians aswell as military but do you  happen to know rough dates ?  ;D

The round on is 2nd-3rd century.

But the cruciform one has the so-called caterpillar arms which are more likely 1st-2nd century.
