Pescennius Niger AE LImes denarius
« on: March 31, 2021, 02:25:09 pm »
Hi guys,

Today I was browsing through some coins I had bought a long time ago and I found this piece - supposedly an AE Limes denarius of Pescennius Niger. Any thoughts on the authenticity? It seems like a possible copy to me (mainly because of the metal imperfections) but I want to hear your thoughts and arguments pro and con.

To me, it looks like a cast.  Just an impression, though.

Limes are cast.  But I think this is modern. Limes are cast using a genuine coin to make the mold. I think this is a cast of modern fake.

Agree completely, I am quite convinced that it is a modern forgery. I was just wondering why someone would start making bronze casts. They are more difficult to do and normally sell for less than the silver ones. I guess it pays back if it is a rare emperor.
