Unusual Byzantine Follis
« on: March 19, 2021, 12:53:33 pm »
With earlier Byzantine Follis's one normally has "ANNO" to the left of the denomination and the regal year to the right.  This coin has "XXX" to the left and "NNN" to the right.

Does anyone know what these characters mean?

According to Grierson, the XXX and NNN are “quite meaningless”.  They were a feature from Leo III to Theophilus
