Buttom or key handle?
« on: March 14, 2021, 06:53:01 am »
Dear  group,

I upload some photos of broze item. It seems roman to me ¿?, but not sure if it could be a buttom. The weight and dimensions seems to be too big for a buttom (16 gm,18 mm diameter).

On the bottom side it seems to be part a pice of iron broken,(joined to the bronze), so, perhaps, it could be an iron key handle?

I am not sure about this so, I ask for help just in case anyone could have any oppinion.

Regards,

Jose

I moved this item to this topic where it fits better.

This is a decorative stud.  You can see the remains of the iron pin on the reverse.  It would have been stuck in a largish wooden object - door, chest, furniture, etc. as decoration.

Some of the larger ones, with thick iron pins, may have had a structural function too - the iron pin being part of the construction.

Thanks a lot SC,

I have know clear :)

Regarding to your explanationn, I would like to ask about this other bronze object. It is similar but smaller (12 gr) and it does not have iron pin. The previous pin (broken) should be made of bronze.

It is possible that this other object were a modern button or a roman one?

I have much more doubts with this object,

Regards,

Jose

Is it heavy and solid?  A button should be quite light and made of stamped hollow metal.

Is that rust or dirt?  If dirt can it be removed with an exact knife?  It is hard to tell what is going on with the brown line.
