Unknown 7th Century Cruciform Monogram Seal
« on: February 26, 2021, 10:51:58 pm »
Just another item that came from a lot of mostly Islamic coins.
Reverse seems fairly rough, any help appreciated .

The obverse is the cruciform monogram of course for Theotokos Cruciform invocative monogram (type V)?  It looks like 6th/7th Century.  What do you think the reverse letters are?  Pogh_poor

Thanks, modified the header of the thread. I meant to write 7th century.
Obverse is the usual Θεοτόκε βοήθει, or β - δ - ε - η - θ - ι - κ - λ - ο - σ - τ - υ/Θεοτόκε βοήθει τῷ σῷ δούλῳ.
Reverse is confusing...

Yes, you almost got it. I'll give you a hint: it is a Hebrew name.

Oh, I struggled and pilfered Dumbarton Oaks all weekend.
I can only assume Krionos is a title? I may see an H on the first line.
Aside just blurting random names, I think I am at an impasse on this one!

There's another letter beginning of the 3rd line: CKPIBWNOC - "skribonos", genitive of "skribon". The personal name is HCAIAC, Greek form of the Hebrew Isaiah. Not sure how to interpret the form HCAIA in the legend. The dignity is in the genitive, so that would also be expected for the personal name (HCAIOV.)
It is not clear what a 'skribon' was at this time. The word evidently derives from Lat. scribere, and possibly referred to a person writing down something, like a scribe. In any case, at the end of the 8th century, a skribon was the commander of a unit of exkoubitors, the elite imperial guard.
Regards
Gert
