[Need help] Unidentified (Roman?) appliques/belt parts.
« on: February 27, 2021, 06:18:15 pm »
Good day everyone,

These are all metal detecting finds from Nijmegen (Noviamagus, a big roman city) in the netherlands. I'm not sure if these are roman but I believe that one is for sure, it has some decoration on it and a loop where something must have gone through. 2 fittings where some leather must have originally sat in, one seems to be decorated and the other tin 'silvered'. Lastly a small broken buckle.

Anyone that can tell me a little more about any of these items?

I appreciate any insight alot.

Thank you and have a great day  :)

Better to post each separately in the future as discussion is easier.

Top left: Unknown, looks like part of a knife handle or something a bit larger.  Hard to tell though.

Top right: Not Roman style, simple strap end and likely long after the Romans, or it could be a simple local manufacture.

Bottom left: This appears to be part of a hinge fitting for lorica segmentata amour!  The flat, rounded end, with flat head-rivet is unique to 1st-2nd century lorica segmentata.

Bottom left: damaged remains of a mid-4th century strap end, so-called heart shape or bollocks shape.

Thank you once again for your insight! ;D I appreciate it alot. Next time i'll post them individual but didn't want to spam. I'm happy to know it's a lorica segmentata fitting and not something medieval  .
