Error coin ancient catalog
« on: January 23, 2021, 07:34:34 am »
Hello,

Here is a coin of Hess catalog 18 february 1936. Noted as Flacilla between roman coins. I think its a pentannumium but of who? Do you distinguish something?

It's from the 1936 Hess catalogue.  I don't think there is a better resolution.

Likely Justinian I(sbvc170a/172) , Justin II (sbvc416) or Maurice Tiberius (sbvc501a) Hard to say.

It's a kind of western mint. Ravenna or so on. Probably Maurice Tiberius.

The revrese should be turned - it's a big :Greek_epsilon: on it.

Something like this:

Yes, and the copy on the sale is turned reverse, the form of blank indicate it is turned.

It's a pentanummium of Justinian from Constantinople. The style of the obverse does look somewhat western but the cross on the reverse is a Greek cross. With a Latin cross instead, I would have said Carthage.

Do you have the technical details (size, wight) from the catalogue?

Also, why is this an important coin? It seems to be an obscure error from an old auction catalogue from the 1930s when Byzantine coins were still poorly understood. Just curious what caught your attention.
