Hello,

I could use some help. I have some problems with this coin. It's an archaic stater from Thasos. Someone suggested to be that it can be fake, because the obverse (with square incuse) is too "smooth" rather than rugged and uneven.

Details: Thasos stater (520 - 463 BCE)
weight: 8.26 g
diameter: circa 20mm
Catalogue: SNG Cop. 1008 var.

Is it genuine?

Hi Prib,

I am not an expert regarding this specific type of coin, but I collect Greek coins.

I don't see anything obvious that would make me suspect it is fake. There is clear definition between the fields and devices. In other words, it doesn't have a "soapy" look. It is worn where it should be worn. The edge cracks/splits are not filled with metal.
