Die studies lecture - ANS Money Talks
« on: January 18, 2021, 09:18:42 pm »
Here is a link to a recent ANS Money Talks lecture by Dr. Warren Esty on the subject of die studies and statistical estimation of dies.

https://youtu.be/VoBUVOUuvRA

It is well worth viewing for those interested in learning more about this aspect of numismatic study.
All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

I hate to fill up the Forum with thank you messages that don't add anything, but I want you to know I watched that and it was fascinating. Please keep posting this kind of thing. Obviously I am now subscribed to the ANS youtube channel. Thanks.

Glad to hear you found it fascinating. Its an extremely interesting subject area.

Should you be inclined you can find his die estimation papers, and the slides to his lecture, among many other things, on his academia.edu page ... https://montana.academia.edu/WarrenEsty

Yesterday I watched it as well, it was really very good  :).

I always have been a bit skeptical of the applicability of these statistical methods, but never had a closer look on them  :-\.
So I was very surprised and impressed about how clearly Etsy pointed out the limits of this method and appealed for caution when applying it. He seems to know exactly what he is doing there, his followers perhaps not always. I have quite often the impression that his formulas are applied too mechanically, without this caution he is demanding  :(.
