Help with possible Marcus Aurelius
« on: January 14, 2021, 08:39:01 pm »
Hi,
Coin is 23.2 mm and weighs 6.7 gm.
My gut feel is Marcus Aurelius but hoping someone can help identify coin.
Thanks

Could you ever be sure?  Some coins are just too far gone!

I do think it is.

Though as djmacdo says it is too far gone to be certain.

It could be Lucius Verus or Commodus, but neither seems as likely.

I would say you likely have to live with "possibly" or "probably" Marcus Aurelius.

Thanks guys.
Yes definitely provincial. I am reasonably certain it is Marcus A - it is clearer in hand. I wish I could take a decent photo!
An idea of reverse?

Dear Danny N & Board,

A more exact suggestion, not necessarily correct of course, but the strong similarity with the obverse of your coin can't be easily ignored:

Here is an example of a different type, but sharing the same obverse die.

Pautalia is one of those provincial cities whose coinage is still full of surprises.  What wouldn't surprise me is if the die used to strike your reverse was also used for this similar issue:

Hope this helps a little.
