I shared this on CT but had to show it off here as well—a gold pendant made by my friend, a master jeweler, using the 3D print file released by the Louvre, where the original resides!

Wow, very nice.

How was it done - 3D print a composite-material example and use that to make a casting mold??

Any images of the process?

He tried a few techniques but ended up 3D printing in plastic then making a mold to create a wax copy for lost wax casting.  The coolest part is that he used a process called depletion gilding to give the gold a more yellow look.  He thinks that is what the Etruscans likely did. Basically, you blast the object with a torch and then throw it in an acid bath.  That causes the copper to rise to the surface a bit. He did that a lot. This way the gold is strong and wearable at 18k but looks closer to 20k with that luscious yellow color.  Lot’s of hand finishing too.
