Constantine I barbarous issue?
« on: March 08, 2021, 03:51:41 am »
Hi all,

There's this solidus of Constantine the Great up for auction but the style is very crude to me. Doesn't look anything like an official issue, or like any other examples of the type. Could it be a barbarous issue or even a modern production?

Purportedly RIC VII 178. 4.28g, mint of Nicomedia. The same coin was up for auction in Dec 2020 by another auction house, but it looks like it was either unsold or withdrawn.

No matches in the Fake Coin reports, although there is another solidus of Nicomedia condemned below, there seem to be some stylistic similarities? Such as with Victory's legs which are engraved as a very stiff 90 degree angle, very unlike official issues. https://www.forumancientcoins.com/fakes/displayimage.php?pos=-17091

80% modern copy, 15% "barbarous" issue, 5% official issue.

(I previously wrote 90-9-1 but it is only one picture; could be misleading)

Whatever it is, I would not trust that it is ancient!

I agree. It is very odd looking indeed. I wouldn't bid on it.

Thank you all for your comments. I was never intending to bid on it, firstly far out of my budget, secondly it has really poor style even if genuine!

Since there's no certainty that this is a modern fake, I'll not upload it to to the fake reports.
