Possible fake Julius Caesar denarius - from a group of five
« on: September 11, 2020, 04:44:47 am »
Please have a look on this Julius Caesar
I am sure it was struck from modern dies. Definitely no ancient style.
It is part of a group of five coins sold yesterday on ebay, all coming from the same engraver´s hand (he likes thick lips!). The whole group fetched around 10,000 Euro - burned money.

Head of Caesar wearing golden crown / L FLAMINIVS IIII VIR Venus holding caduceus and sceptre
Crawf. 485/1
3,93 g

Klaus

I do not like them, their style is imho strange (the eyes are very huge and strage) and their style is very similar as if they could be the work of the same artist.
If they are from the same artist we would have a problem because between this emperors lays too much time
Earliest is Julius Caesar 46 - 45 BD and latest Didia Clara 193 and Pescenius Niger 193-194 AD, no  human can live so long.
The surface looks strange not sure if this is the result of cleaning or done intentionally.

The style of Pescenius Niger looks actually convincing but that it comes in company with the other ones and that the style is so similar makes it suspicious, too.

But there exist contemporary imitations of Roman coins and there the same artis can make Denari auf different previous emperors and the current one.
But I am not convinced that this is here the case. Could they still be such contemporary imitations?

I do not think that they are official mint products, could anyone check please  if proven authentic coins from this dies exist or die links to authentic coin or at least authentic coins from these emperors with similar style which could be from same artist?

I didn´t find this die in coinarchives - and I still stick to all five coins being modern products.

Compare this authentic one to the horrible fake shown by OP:

Julius Caesar. Assassinated 15 March, 44 BC. AR denarius (19mm; 3.57 gm; 6h). Struck August, 43 BC. Rome mint. L. Flaminius Chilo, moneyer. Obv: Laureate head right. Anepigraphic. Light ancient scratches. Rev: Pax standing left, holding caduceus and scepter. Crawford 485/1; Sydenham 1089; RSC 26.
