Salus seated sestertius of A. Pius
« on: September 08, 2020, 09:56:01 pm »
The rev. legend of this sestertius is mostly off flan, but was probably [SA]LV - S [AVG], with S - C across field.

Is this a new sestertius type for the COS IIII issue with Salus seated?

I find the same type with

COS III, rev. SALVS AVG, BM 1309 and

COS III, rev. legend DES IIII, BM 1649, but not with

COS IIII, rev. legend SALVS AVG.

There is such a COS IIII sestertius with legend SALVS AVG, but only with type Salus standing left not seated, feeding snake coiled around altar, and holding rudder on globe in left hand (BM 1715, pl. 41.1).

Maybe one of our Antonine specialists has seen another specimen of this SALVS AVG sestertius with Salus seated and COS IIII?

Looks like a new type!

It must be of interest to Johan Van Heesch for his volume on Pius.

Timka,

Thanks for your response.

Could you tell me what Antonine volume J. Van Heesch is working on?

I would guess it must be the revised RIC, but there is no indication that Van Heesch has taken on this project in the Foreword of R. Abdy's Hadrian volume, published less that a year ago.
