ATHENS TETRADRACHM NEW STYLE HELP
« on: August 02, 2020, 08:47:52 pm »
I haven't been able to identify the Thompson number on this one.

Lettering I believe is: Α - ΘΕ / MHT - LH / ΡΟΔΩ - MΟΣ / PΟΣ - ΘΕ / EYK / ΔHΣ

Besides the Owl there is a flower/pomengranate?

Any help would be appreciated.

Should be this series
https://www.coinarchives.com/a/openlink.php?l=158585233261172609e74cf43e76cf0fb861cafd7a0de1
This link doesn't work for me  :-\.

It seems to be Thompson 639 d :
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=mdp.39015010306465&view=image&seq=249
if the letters beneath the amphora are really ΠE. These letters are not ΣΦ (the other variant in Thompson), if they are ME it would be a variant not mentioned in Thompson.

Are you perhaps using Coin Archives Pro subject to charge?

I do - but all my links work on our German forum.

The URLs of your CA links all begin with "https://www.coinarchives.com/a/openlink.php". In the text after that you always have three "" at different places. And these "" are obviously eaten away by the Forvm software .

But: If I am searching in CA and look at a single coin, then the URL of a lot always begins with "https://www.coinarchives.com/a/lotviewer.php" and does not contain any "".
How do you produce the links? From where do you copy them?

Altamura

Between these "" there was originally an upright bar (or how you call that). In the preview of my posting I still have seen them, in the published version they are gone  :-\.
Forvm software seems to be very hungry  :).

Edit: The correct name of the symbol is "vertical bar": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_bar  :)

I work with CA Pro
When I click on the description of the found entry, I can get a sharable, stable link to this entry. (Link works right now - prior to post)
The link works in both German forums (correct English plural?)
This link isn´t provided by the "free" CA version

The vertical bar is used by our code to identify segments of text that should not be auto linked.  For example if there was an auto link for Greek and an auto link for Coins, "Greek Coins" would have two different links. If we want it to link to Greek Coins we type a vertical line before or after the words Greek and Coins. This is the first time I have ever seen vertical lines in a URL.

Coin is a reverse die match for one sold by Noble Numismatics.

Sadly I forgot to download Noble's photo of the all important obverse.

New Reverses for New Styles are frequently found still and occasionally new obverses but obverse die transfers and completely new issues are the most important for researchers.

Nice coin.

Mine is in my gallery.

Thanks for the copy of the Noble tetradrachm OBVERSE image-very useful!

I declare it is an obverse die match and reverse with yours. But it not the same example!

A quick look at Thompson's plates should bring out the obverse reference.

I shall let you try and I'll have a go tomorrow!

Many thanks,

John

The obverse is an easy spot and is Thompson 640.
The reverse is quite clearly a  new find for that month, H and 3rd magistrate with 2nd control ME.

Thus T640/New
