Pius RIC 853 var unrecorded?
« on: August 02, 2020, 03:07:06 pm »
From a reputable Australian auction house I bought this lovely and possibly unrecorded coin of Antoninus Pius: ANTONINVS AVG PIVS PP TR P XI around a nude bare bust with an aegis. The reverse commemorates Pius' first ten years as tribune: PRIMI/ DECEN/NALES /COS IIII/ SC within a wreath. This particular series is common, but there are many variations in the bust types; about five are in most catalogs, but the aegis is new. It weighs 9.55 grams, which is normal for an as.
Has anyone ever seen this bust variant on this type?

A nice acquisition!

Strack 1012 reports a bust left Pius TR P XI As with PRIMI DECENNALES rev.  in Paris; Strack 1013 obv. similar but with rev. [VOTA] in exergue, emperor sacrificing, in Milan.

Maybe one of these coins or both also has the aegis like yours? Remember that Strack unfortunately used the same bust code for Head only and for Bust with fold of cloak or fold of aegis on front shoulder.

Thanks, Curtis, Alberto and Eric for your kind comments. I do have a question about this reverse; it is generally described as 'text in oak-wreath' . But why 'oak' ? The leaves don't look like oak, but perhaps there is a historical background I am not aware of. Any ideas?

Frans
