Sear 2110 or 2144 dilemma
« on: August 01, 2020, 03:09:17 pm »
Hello. Please help me to understand the difference between John III Sear 2110 and Theodore II Sear 2144.

Here I have four coins of this kind and I nearly broke my eyes looking at the specimens on the internet and trying to identify them.

A long standing problem.

Some examples have "OEm-nouel" (or something like that) on the obverse, and others don't. Lianta seems to list both types as SBCV 2110 of John III.

Lianta reads the ruler as (I)W/D/C on one example, but I wouldn't take this as certain.

I have never seen examples of either type where the ruler's name is really clear, so I don't know for sure to whom the two types should be assigned.

This is a problem that only further data can solve.
