Thasos stater, low weight
« on: August 01, 2020, 02:05:33 pm »
Greetings ! Please help me with this coin. As I know Thasos staters usually are circa 9 grams, but this one is 5.32 gr and 20 mm. Is it fake ? Оr just another denomination ?

The staters of Thasos have some irregularities in weight, see e.g. Olivier Picard, "Monnayage thasien du Ve siècle av. J.-C", in: Comptes rendus des séances de l'Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres, 126e année, N. 3, 1982. pp. 412-424 (in French): http://www.persee.fr/web/revues/home/prescript/article/crai_0065-0536_1982_num_126_3_13961

On page 420 he writes that there are specimens even below 5 g.

So the weight of your coin is unusual, but not singular.
