Help with Mionnet monograms
« on: August 01, 2020, 04:09:12 pm »
Hi all,

I have a coin that is listed in Mionnet volume I as number 888. At least, that's what I've been told and I want to check this. I've found the Mionnet volumes (https://gallica.bnf.fr/services/engine/search/sru?operation=searchRetrieve&version=1.2&startRecord=0&maximumRecords=15&page=1&collapsing=disabled&query=dc.relation%20all%20%22cb30951396w%22%20sortby%20dc.title%2Fsort.ascending) but I can't find the tables with the monogrammes.  ???

Anyone who knows where I can find the tables with monogrammes, especially those related to volume 1? I've been scrolling down the numerous volumes but can't find pictures or descriptions linked to the monogrammes.

Thanks!

Mionnet volume I number 888 can be seen here:
https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k399085w/f21.image
but there is no monogram mentioned  :-\.

Are you sure that it is volume I and not supplement volume I? There you find at number 888 mentioned the monogram 27:
https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k3990881/f86.image

The monograms can be found at the end of the volume:

Hi Altamura, I'm referring to this: https://books.google.be/books?id=J4ICAAAAYAAJ&printsec=titlepage&redir_esc=y#v=snippet&q=888&f=false page 584.
Which can also be found here: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k399085w/f297.image

Now I'm confused  ;D Is this not volume I (tome premier)?

888. Bouclier Macédonien ;  au milieu ,caducée. Rf. BA. Casque à duex aigrettes, entre un caducée et le balaustium ; dessous, le monogramme (168)

In your URL monogramme 168 is not what I see on my coin, it should be a delta on a H. Only the top of the monogramme is on my coin so I want to check and see the full monogramme for comparison and to make sure it's the right reference/monogramme. My coin can be seen here: https://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/macedonia/kings/demetrius_II/Mionnet_888.jpg. The reference was attributed by Helvetica so i'm fairly sure it'll be correct, just want to see the full monogramme for myself (while also practising using these big volume books  :D )

You are right, it is Tome 1,Volume 2.

But the numbers aren't unique (I haven't been thinking about that, sorry), in this volume the number 888 occurs more than once because each region has it's own numbering  :-\.
Hence a number alone is not a clear reference, the page should be added (or the region of the coin), so your coin is Mionnet Vol I-2 page 584, number 888.

The monograms for the first series of these books (not the supplementary series) are listed in a special volume. Monogram 168 can be found here:
https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/bpt6k3990868/f138.image
it is the last one on the page.

Thanks a lot for your help! That's indeed the monogram I was looking for. It appears that the top half of this monogram is shown on my coin. However, with the bottom half it might be another monogram too I suppose.

Indeed, very confusing that numbers are re-used and not unique!
