Seal
« on: August 04, 2020, 06:57:59 am »
An interesting (overstruck?) seal which was sold a couple of months ago. What I’m not quite certain about - is it a later or earlier seal? The inscription is clearly from a poorly engraved die, but can’t work out when it was from. From the photos I can make out the following:

ANIA (?)
E(?)VCTPA
T...HWC...

Any ideas?

Can it be dated from the legend and design? Thanks!

Regards.

I haven’t yet been able to find an exact match for this seal, but I have come across similar cross designs in coinage and some seals from the 11th to 13th centuries. These bear some parallels. Not exact matches, but they might help in narrowing down possible dates for the above seal. Thoughts?
