ID-Emperor and City please
« on: July 17, 2020, 12:03:15 pm »
Hi, any help on this coin is welcomed. Reverse is Zeus with legend (?)  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Theta_2: but I cannot link this to a mint city.
Obverse looks like Caracalla or Geta, but cannot be 100% sure. Weight about 10g, AE 25.
Thanks
Adax

Looks like Gabala (Syria) with its strange inscriptions ...
The portrait is very close to https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=2314826

Hi, I agree the portrait looks like Geta and I first thought about him, but with only the portrait it cannot be conclusive. On the reverse, the letter ".. :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Theta_2:.." cannot be for a city as I cannot find any Asia Minor city with this exact string of characters in it.
On second thought, this  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Theta_2:  may well be for the name of a local magistrate, (or alternatively a date but of that I am not sure). I am not too familiar with magistrate name nor a specialist so i am totally in the dark here.

The example you sent says it is Astarte on the reverse although I think it is Zeus instead.

Anyhow, without any additional clue about the legend my coin might remain a mystery.
Cheers

Hi, on second thought i think you are right about Gabala as the mint city. Just found another coin on acsearch: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=7131807
also for Geta with the  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: in the legend. clearly same portrait as my coin on the obverse.
No idea what the  :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: represents or means in the legend on the reverse. Maybe an era or a date ?
I take it for Gabala for the moment until more clarification comes in (if any).
Cheers
Adax.

Probably  :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Theta_2: should read as  :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Alpha: :Greek_Beta: (special shape of the  :Greek_Beta: letter ? )

We have the same type with AΓAΘ (the coin here) and with ΔION (the link of Vladimir P), so most probably these are standing for magistrate's names.

Hello Altamura, do you mean you have also a coin with similar legend ? do you have a picture of it ?
So clearly Gabala coins have "weird" legend.
I have checked the snible website (http://snible.org/coins/library/muensterberg/m.html) in search of possible magistrate name but cannot find a fit.
Thanks
