Unknown hemiobol with cryptic Greek-letter reverse
« on: July 05, 2020, 02:52:56 pm »
Any comps for this hemiobol (?), 6mm, .25g? I know that the right way to read the Greek letters will change as we turn the reverse, but however I turn it, no joy. Thanks for having a look!

SO for Soloi, Cilicia; obv. Athena head right.

Best regards,

Thanks, Rupert; this is an attractive suggestiion, though according to Isegrim a bunch of grapes always accompanies the SO inscription for Soloi. Of course, Isegrim isn't all-knowing!.

Similar but not the same, conjecturally attributed to Soloi, Dr. Reinhard Fischer, Auction 151, lot 75, 2016 (https://www.numisbids.com/n.php?lot=75&p=lot&sid=1589):
Temper thy haste with sloth -- Taverner / Erasmus.

There is another coin on acsearch with this ΣΟ reverse: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4798303

It shows on the obverse the head of an amazon with the characteristic hairdo (or cap?) which is pictured quite often on coins of Soloi (with grapes  :) ):

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4119463

Then there is a coin in the British Museum which is quite similar to the coin here and is attributed to Soloi:

So there is a high probability that this coin is from Soloi in Cilicia  :).

Many thanks, Altamura (and Rupert, again); the peaked Amazon cap which is dimly apparent on the Fischer and, more clearly, the Naumann example (https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=4798303 = https://www.biddr.com/auctions/numismatiknaumann/browse?a=250&l=237539) as well as my own really clinches the Soloi attribution -- a very rare issue!

Coincidentally I just managed to win left- and right-facing examples of this rare Soloi issue, both peaked-cap-Amazon obverses, both 6 mm, .30 g:
