Syriac? Lead Seal 16.06 mm x11.32 mm x 4.17 mm 6.14 g
« on: May 30, 2020, 06:39:03 pm »
I believe that this is a lead seal with a Syriac? phrase.  The seal is roughly a rectangle and has a channel through it.  It measures approximately 16.06 mm x11.32 mm x 4.17 mm and weighs 6.14 g.  The dealer described it as Byzantine and  4th/5th century.

I know that Syriac was "the liturgical and religious language of members of the Arab tribes who converted to Christianity all the way from Syria to Southern Arabia. It became primarily the language of the Miaphysite denomination (that emphasized the unity of Christ’s human and divine natures after incarnation in one nature—mia-physis in Greek) that was officially condemned by the Byzantine Church and Empire ."

I showed the seal to someone was not familiar with Syriac who said that it wasn't Arabic.

So my questions are is the text in Syriac? If so, what is its meaning?  Is it in a style from the area of the Byzantine Empire or is it possibly from the area of the Sasanian Empire (Persia) where Syriac was also used?  If not Syriac, what language?  Any help would be appreciated

I have shown this seal to a professor of Syriac studies who said it was not Syriac or other semitic text.  It is not Arabic/Kufic script.  Could it be old Turkic or Bulgarian?  Pogh_poor

Could those be numbers rather than letters?

I have thought that they might be numerals but they don't seem to correspond to any specific system of numerals.  Do you have any that you think match?

It might show a date - 1595? Or 1611 when turned around?

I don't think it is a date or that  the characters are "Arabic-English" numerals

Interesting. It may not be a date, but I don’t think it’s as old as the 4/5th century or Byzantine/Bulgarian. My thoughts anyway - and I stand to be corrected. Either way it’s a fascinating object.
