Interesting Byzantine Seal
« on: June 22, 2020, 10:55:24 am »
I have acquired an interesting seal which measures 19.37 mm  and weighs 5.89 g.

On the obverse is presumably the Mother of God as I can make out  :Greek_Mu: :Greek_Rho: and  :Greek_Theta_2:  :Greek_Upsilon_2: - Μήτηρ Θεοῦ on either side of the nimbate bust.

On the reverse is a 5 line inscription which I am having difficulty with because of the characters (4th on the first line and 2nd and 4th on the second line) which looks to me like OV to me.  Are those "OV"?  Any help identifying this seal would be appreciated.

yes, ligate OV's on the 2nd line: KURUKΛ, so kouboukleisios.

Then episk(e)ptites of ...: S EΠICK/Π, T,

Letter after the article might be R for 'imperial' (basilikou/on/es).

Can't make sense of the personal name on the first line. It seems to read NWΔUI  or NWΔOI. NW might be N(ikola)o, as there seems to be an abbreviation line above those letters. But that's rare for that name.

It may conceivably even be bishop - episk(o)p(o) t(on)...

Thank you for the valuable assistance in identifying this seal's owner.  It appears to be 10th/11th Century to me - is this correct?

Following the R, there appears to me to read  :Greek_Kappa:  :Greek_Gamma: :Greek_Nu:  :Greek_Pi:  :Greek_Omicron:  - would this be a location?

I think that's most likely (an episkeptites could also be linked to an institution), but there might be other possibilities. In any case, I can't make sense of the start and end of this legend.

Hi,

Perhaps is it an episkeptites of the imperial estates of...?
EPISKEPTITES TON BASILIKON KTIMATON ...

(...) S EΠΙCK
Π, Τ, R(with abbreviation line above) KT, vertical line of a letter
(open Ω?)NΠΟ...

Wild guess: Konstantinopoleos?

Yes, that is a good idea. Perhaps pogh can see of there's an abbreviation mark after KT for T,R,KT, Then we have a pretty good idea about the name of the estates. I think I see another U before PO, which of course leaves a lot of options apart from (Konstantin)oupo(leos)
