My Japanese Gallery
« on: June 12, 2020, 11:56:27 pm »
I have spent the last month attempting to attribute a lot of Japanese Kanei Tsuho. The diffences between coins are subtle, and the catalogs available to non-Japanese readers are far from complete. To put it mildly, these inexpensive coins are a real challenge, and I have been assisted in my efforts by the members of the Zeno website. I just uploaded three different varieties of Ishinomaki-sen (all with a blank reverse) to my gallery:

Photos below. I love the challenge and learning curve, although I have no doubt that these are not for everybody.

Thanks for sharing!  I started selling cash coins because I had a huge group of unattributed coins that I picked up in an estate. I was surprised to find how much I enjoyed working with them. It expanded my interests out of Europe to the rest of the world.

I still haven't finished working through the lot of Chinese cash that I bought here on Forum last year. most of which are Northern Song. My daughter is giving me Gorney's book on Northern Song varieties for Father's Day, so I will try to find the time to resume my study of that lot.

Here is the last of my Ishinomaki-sen. It is an iron coin with the mark sen on the reverse:

Hi,

I have long enjoyed cash coins and assembled a collection of over 300 Chinese, Japanese, Annamese and Korean pieces. Started in my early teens and every five years or so I rekindle my interest.

Mauseus, Yours are very nicely displayed. My interest in the various series that I collect ebbs and flows as well. I only have a few Annamese but no Korean. I rarely acquire oriental cash coins other than in unattributed lots as I enjoy the attribution process. This is one of the very few aspects of numismatics that can be enjoyed in a big way for very little expense. Stkp

I just added two Genbun-sen, cast at Kameido Edo. The second one has an interesting casting flaw.

Thanks, Joe.

I just added five Takatsu-sen, cast from 1741. The identification of this series is easy because of the presence of the character 元 Gen on the reverse. However, the identification of the variety is a challenge -- especially since Hartill lists only five of the ten circulating varieties. I became more successful in identifying varieties once I stopped trying to match the coins to Hartill and just studied the differences between coins. The main focal point in differentiating varieties is on the 寶 ho character. The variety confirmation was made courtesy of the moderator of Zeno:

I recently added three Ashio-sen, cast between 1741 and 1745. Here, too, the identification of this series is easy because of the presence of the character 足 Ashi on the reverse. The challenge is in the identification of the variety; there are five but Hartill lists only two. As before, variety confirmation/identification courtesy of the moderator of the Japanese section of Zeno:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-163661

I also posted a Nagasaki-sen issued from 1767-1773. This one is easy because of the character 長 Naga on the reverse. There are no varieties:

Thank you, Joe. I picked up six random Kanei Tsuho at a coin show, which sparked my curiosity (I had not given any thought to these for years), prompting me to buy a lot of 100 coins. I am very pleased by the number of varieties that I am discovering in the lot. It is slow-going but there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I just added another six coins, all Yottsuho-sen cast from 1708-1712 at the Kameido-mura Edo mint.  There are at least nine varieties of Yottsuho-hen, but Hartill only lists five and Jones only lists two. They are characterized by the hook on the right arm of 永 ei:

I have just added a series of coins known as Fukyu-te (Fukyu script, or “in the manner of Fukyu”), which are named after a Nagasaki merchant who studied the series. They were cast at seven mints. Their distinguishing characteristics are a prominent protruding 爪 tsume/claw at the bottom left of the 貝 kai component of 寶 ho, and a closed マ ma/head on 通 tsu. The head of the 永 ei is also drooping. On the Zeno website, the coins in the series are organized as “The five mints of Kanei Tsuho with the character EI inclined to the left,” although in many cases this inclination does not appear to be present.

I added five ordinary cash from the Jumantsubo mint to my gallery last night. They differ markedly from the Fukyo-te cash cast at Jumantsubo that I added last week.

The first two are stated by Hartill to have been "formerly attributed to the Jumantsubo mint" but now attributed to Sarue. However, I am advised by the moderator of the Japanese section of Zeno that this is a mistake and that they are still attributed as Jamantsubo-sen:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-164096

The other three are classic Jumantsubo-sen with tiger tail kans:

Thanks once again, Joe.

A few more:

First, a coin cast at the Hiranoshinden Fukagawa-Edo mint in the style of the Jumantsubo mint (Jumantsubo-te):

Second, a few Ko-Kanei Tsuho (old Kanei Tsuho):

I just added the following:

Koume-te:

https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-164218

Akita-sen:

Uncertain (Fuchi-sen):
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-164215

Fujisawa-sen:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-164214

These are the last of the 6 Kanei Tsuho that I got back in January and the lot of 98 that I obtained in May. Out of 104 coins, 47 were non-duplicates. I could not have done it without the assistance of the moderator of Zeno's Japanese coin section, who I thank. I learned a lot and had a lot of fun, but to be honest, I need a break from Kanei Tsuho.
