Some New Parthian and Olympian Coins
« on: July 19, 2020, 09:05:55 am »
Hello again,

it's been a while, but now I have finally sat down to work with my coins.  Over the past 2 years some new tdrs, drachms, and bronzes have accumulated, and here are some of them:

First, a nice little Phraates II dichalkous with a decent obv. and rev.:

I couldn't resist getting another one of these S.30s despite the blemish
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-164030;

this Phraates III drachm belonged to a well known author and collector of Parthian coins named Debevoise

the Sellwood 78.1 Vologases III with the rounded off beard are quite rare

the quality of the strike and metal persuaded me to get this run-off-the mill type Vologases III

another type I find difficult to resist

and last a good quality Orodes II tdr

This is it, for the time being,
stay well,

Schatz

Of course, it was to be 'Elymaian', not 'Olympian' but the auto correction didn't quite get it and changed what it did not know.

Great stuff, Schatz. The S.30.2v. is outstanding. And the “Olympian” (LOL) tets are impressive. Good to see you’re still adding to that amazing collection.

Thanks for comments and replies, Tracy, Robert, and Stkp.  One more group will be posted this week, mostly Artabanos II bronzes, which are no fun to take pictures of.

Sorry for the delay, my camera went on strike.
Here are four more Parthian drachms and one Daoi hemidrachm, no more Artabanos II coppers - I realized how many I already have in my gallery. This new group consists of coins I bought because they are of better quality than the one I have.

This Orodes I has good metal and a very good strike:

Could not resist the good price of this Phraates III from Mithradatkart:
https://www.forumancientcoins.com/gallery/displayimage.php?pos=-164274;

the Pakoros II belongs to a hoard found in Persis and is discussed in an article by Sellwood in the 1989 vol. of the Numismatic Chronicles. Tough I already have a similar one I got this one just for its rarity:

Next to nothing is known about this Unknown King who ruled for a maximum of 1 year. I have two similar ones, but again, it is rare, so I got it:

This Daoi hemidr. shows a remarkably East Asian portrait on the obv.  The reason I got it is that it has a complete rev. image of a soldier or hunter:

This will probably be it for a while.  No coins shows, no temptations.

Stay well!

Thanks,
quadrans.
I am posting this coin now which should have appeared with the last batch but somehow I missed it. It is a Mithradates I, or Phriapatios to Mithradates, as it is being identified now, with a bit of a battered obverse and double-struck reverse, but it has an exergual monogram (probably an M) which makes it quite rare.  If it is a mint monogram is not certain, it would stand for Margiane.  In the picture it is hard to see in the lower right corner below the exergual line, in hand it is much more obvious:

Best to all,
Schatz
