Domitian Denar check pls
« on: June 01, 2020, 10:26:03 am »
Hello, i purchased this denar recently and the moment i took it into hands i got very suspicious its fake.

First because of stile and reflection. Reflection is very strange almost mirror like and i can almost see myself in it.

Also because of edge, i dont see these standard cracks that hammered coin has. Also there are possible cast evidences.
Its different from most Roman denars i have...

Please someone more experienced take a look at it.  Its 3,2g. 19mm.

Weight?  It looks as if it may have been polished.  Otherwise it looks ok to me, though I am far from a specialist in this area.

Thanks on replies guys. I guess its probably polished and it has some toning therefore thats why it was strange to me.  I will try to take better picture tomorrow.

Anyways im glad it stays in my collection because i would hate to have fake coin as i believe all of my coins are real ancient coins.

I need to fotograph and update my coins as i have a collection of about 250 of them now : )

@Jay GT4,    i see that you have handfull of Domitian denars like 40 or so : ) so i  guess you seen plenty of them and would probably spot a fake.

We have at least 4 "Flavian's specialists" here on FORVM: Jay GT4, David Atherton, orfew and FlaviusDomitianus. Sorry if I forgot others. But these 4 are regular posters here.

I think between the 4 of us we may have close to every coin in RIC, although the bulk of that comes from David and Alberto's collection.

Was wondering, as I am still learning, why would someone polish a coin. To remove encrustations? How would you polish a coin? I have a few stubborn denarii that have black tar like deposits that I cannot get off.

People polish coins for several reasons.  One is for mounting in jewelry.  Another in the mistaken belief they have cleaned the coin.

For hard encrustations on silver you can try the aluminum foil and lemon juice technique.  Plenty of posts here if you search for it.

Personally I do not see any red flags. Though it is impossible to authenticate a coin from a photo, given the information provided, I think this one looks ok.
