Possible Magna Urbica aureus or binio?
« on: May 27, 2020, 06:43:56 am »
Strange coin sold only as "gold coin" with a weight of 6,2 grams.

It exists a correspondent antoninianus RIC 345 (or also called aurelianus) for Magna Urbica, but the weight of the gold coin is too high to be an aureus.

A tentative of creating a binio or an heavy aureus by making a gold copy of the antoninianus? Or there can be any chance that it is a legit unpublished coin? There are for instance some rare heavy aureus for Magna Urbica's husband Carinus, so it could have been maybe an existing type also for her?

I attach also a photo of a correspondent antoninianus RIC 345.

Her husband, Carinus did issue a 'heavy aureus' of about that weight, but none are listed, as far as I know, for her. I can't comment on the authenticity of the coin.

The presence of the crescent below the portrait could't be seen as an additional evidence that it's a gold copy of an antoninianus (also the portrait itself is the same as the type present in the antoninianus)?
An heavy aureus would't have used a different and more elegant portrait? Maybe similar to the ones used for her aureus types?

To me the style indicates it is a modern freehand fantasy.  I think there is next to no chance it is real.

I don't think aurei would have the XXI on the reverse.
