Kroisos stater ancient counterfeit ?
« on: May 22, 2020, 04:50:49 am »
I received this Kroisos stater in a lot with other fake coins.
I thought first ít could be an electrotype because in this lot of 7 fakes were 4 electrotypes and 2 cast fakes (WRL + old Dido medal cast).
But the edge has not a smooth filed edge/rim as the electrotypes I own at the moment and no traces of the seam where the two halves were joined together. And the coins seems to have a silver core and not a copper core like electrotype fakes.

Do ancient gold plated silver counterfeits exist from this emissions?

So, is this coin an ancient counterfeit?

Or an electrotype and I oversee something?

Or seomething else?

Your help is very much appreciate.
And I will not bite, I only bite if there is a chance that authentic coins will condemed because even if they later turn out to be authentic due to die links or die matches to authentic coins from excavations etc they still will be tainted :(

Pictures are made with usb microscope.

Sorry, I did not expect and feared not getting an answer there anymore, because the members there answer generally very fast and I feared that no one there would answer anymore so I asked here :(
I wrote here before you answered in German board.
And I could  have posted answers from German board here, too.

4.14 gm is rather light for a silver half-stater, but it is knocked around.

With best regards

Not sure - is the core really silver?

Core looks silver, which is in most areas black oxidised.
But I can not completely exclude the possibility that it is lead or pewter, I think that they can look similar if oxidised.
I do not have XRF analyzer :(

So do ancient counterfeits exist of gold plated silver or are they all made of plated lead or pewter or copper ?

Best wishes
Daniel

Certainly there are plated silver versions of various early electrum coins of Ionia and Lydia, but I don't recall any of this particular type.

I've never heard of any ancient pewter copies - if your coin is pewter or base metal I would suspect it to be more recent (although it certainly looks old).

Hi glebe,

I am a moderator here in the Greek section of Forum.

I edited your 5/24/20 post because you broke a rule. You used quotes when you answered a post directly above yours. This wastes server space, and it annoys owner Joe.

The only exception to this rule is when you are responding to a lengthy post directly above yours, and you quote only a small portion of that post because you want to highlight the fact that you are responding only to that portion of the above post.

I don't actually care much about server space. The unecessary quoting does annoy me, but it is because it interrupts smooth reading and results in unnecessary scrolling.
