Byzantine Seal of Ioustos? 18.35 mm 6.06g
« on: May 19, 2020, 07:10:21 pm »
I have an interesting 6th Century seal which measures 18.35 mm and weighs 6.06g. It was found near Caesarea Maritima.
On the obverse is Bust of the Virgin holding a medallion with the Christ child before her. Crosses to right and left. All within a braided border
On the reverse is a cruciform monogram with  :Greek_Iota:  :Greek_Omicron: :Greek_Upsilon_2:  :Greek_Tau: :Greek_Iota: C All within a braided border

I think it can reasonably solve IOVCTOV (Justus/Ioustos).  Am I close?
The dealer indicated that it solved MARIANOS which seems incorrect.

If that is C at the bottom, then yes, Ioustos is most likely. Marionos is out of the question.

Yes, it a C.  So it is  Ioustos.  It is relatively uncommon to have a separate Iota?  Pogh_poor
