Trajan Double Sestertius?
« on: February 14, 2020, 01:52:02 am »
I saw this a couple weeks ago and was curious about the very low weight. It is not for sale and not my coin.
Supposedly a Trajan Decius Double Sestertius with size and weight of 34 mm and 22.85 g.
The 22.85g seems way too light for a double sestertius. All that I have seen were 10-12 grams heavier.
The coin looks good except for some smoothing.
Did these go that low in weight

Looking at the specimens in OCRE you see that there is a quite a variance in weight: the heaviest one has 45 g, the lightest 27 g:  http://numismatics.org/ocre/id/ric.4.tr_d.115
So 22 g seem to be possible to me.

Still the coin in question is clearly an old cast forgery, the surfaces, raised rims and blurry devices are quite typical.

Cast makes sense. Thanks.

I'll add it to the fakes.
