Alexios I Aspron Trachy Id Confirmation
« on: February 12, 2020, 01:33:49 am »
I purchased this coin last weekend.  I don't collect this area of Byzantine coins, but I just liked the looks of the coin (and the price too).

It is a billon aspron tyrachy of Alexios I, 1092 - 1118 AD.  The assigned Sear number is 1918.  I checked ACS and Wildwinds and it appears to be a correct attribution.

The coin weighs 4.03 grams and is about 27.8 mm in diameter.

Can anyone confirm (or correct) that attribution?

Confirmed it  is SBCV-1918  and you have a nice example.

I won mine at auction last year. The silver content on these was as high as 8%

29mm 4.92 gm

Thanks Simon.

I liked the portrait and that his name is basically complete.

Craig, yours is a very nice example , I have seen these in very poor condition and yours is attractive and photographs very well.

These coins were the beginning of billion trachea, trachea minted after the 12th century they become much messier and much more difficult to attribute.
