Dating Byzantine Seal of Ioannes 7th Century?
« on: February 02, 2020, 07:48:42 am »
I have a nice small Byzantine seal of an Ioannes.  It measures 13.91 mm and weighs 4.53 g.
On the obverse is Bust of the Mother of God, the Child (or the medallion of Christ) before her
On the reverse, there is a cruciform monogram for Ioannes.
Would the 7th Century be an appropriate date for this seal?

Yes, 6th to 7th century. The small diameter would indicate an earlier date (see  Cheynet, “Sceaux byzantins des musées d'antioche et de tarse" which is downloadable on academia), 6th century, but these are pretty much impossible to date exactly.
