Kyzikos monograms
« on: January 30, 2020, 11:54:46 am »
I am currently ID-ing several hundred Mysian bronzes for "uncle John" and am searching for works which actually show the monograms on bronzes of Kyzikos such as the Hera/torch, Hera/KY-ZI in wreath, bull's head/KY-ZI in wreath etc.
I have already checked the following:

Fritze in Nomisma X - (but he does not illustrate or describe the actual monograms and the plates are poor)

BMC Mysia
Imhoof MG, GM, KM, KM additions, GRM etc
Kyzikos Excavations in NC 2007
McClean
Mionnet
Paris Inventory
Sestini Ainslie, Chaudoir etc. collections
SNG Cop
SNG France V
SNG Turkey 3
SNG Turkey 4
SNG von Aulock
The Tek collection
Traité
Waddington

and several other works. Can anyone think of any good lists which may show the monograms ? The one book I don't have is SNG Tübingen vol. 4 which is sold out, or only for sale at a ridiculously high price.

A small list of monograms is shown on page 382 (page 399 of the pdf file) of
"THE COINS OF KYZIKOS FROM THE MUSEUMS BURSA, BALIKESIR AND BANDIRMA"

Thanks, I'll have a look at that.
I think I will make an xls list of these coins with all the different monograms.
Anyone got any more ideas ?

I don't know a comprehensive collection of these monograms, von Fritze is obviously still the only work about the coinage of Kyzikos as a whole  :(.

Concerning SNG Tübingen Mysia: The libraries in Basel, Zurich, Bern and Konstanz seem to have it, perhaps this is an option for you:

I have ordered SNG Tübingen from Uni Bern.

I have also been diligently ploughing through numerous additional works, including SNG Ashmolean etc. and have so far compiled an xls list with the following numbers of types - note that these are ONLY the types which have a monogram, letter(s) or symbol on the reverse. :

Bull butting right / torch: 17
Bull's head right / KYZI in wreath: 18
Prow of galley / KYZI in wreath: 4
Prow of galley / Bucranium in wreath: 1
Tunny fish left in wreath / KY-ZI in wreath: 7
Head of Kore / Caduceus: 3
head of Apollo / lyre: 3
Head of Kore / KYZI in wreath: 55
head of Kore or Apollo / Tripod with flat wreath above: 29
head of Kore / tripod on tunny, radiate disk above: 42
head of Apollo / tripod on tunny, no radiate disk: 2
Sphinx/torch: 1
Head of Kore / Bucranium in wreath: 1
Head of Kore / Bull butting left: 3
Head of Athena / Bull's head left: 3

Number of different monograms: 108

UPDATE
I checked all the Mysia coins in some other catalogs, now including SNG Tübingen, Thorwaldsen, Lavy, Mabbott, Prowe, Weber, Amasya, Feuardent, Hunter, Hedervar etc, and have come up with an xls list with a total of 261 non-Provincial coins - all bronzes with a letter, symbol or monogram, and 158 different monograms. This includes ploughing through about 600 AE coins on CoinArchivesPro.
I did not add many Fritze references to my xls list, because, as I mentioned, he does not describe the monograms and - although I have the printed book - the plate images are very small and not too clear. They didn't have hi-res photography back in 1917 when Nomisma X was written.
