Seal with St. Nicholas?
« on: January 22, 2020, 08:42:30 pm »
I acquired an interesting Byzantine seal.  It measures 24.09 mm and weighs 9.35 g.  On the obverse is a bust of the Virgin and . : :Greek_Mu:  :Greek_Rho:  :Greek_Theta_2:  :Greek_Upsilon_2: star above (Mήτηρ Θεοῦ?)  Border of dots.  On the reverse is a bust of a bearded saint - Nicholas? - holding a cross topped staff in his left hand and a book? in his right.  In the left field, I can see an  :Greek_Iota: with  :Greek_Nu:  :Greek_Iota: below it.  To the right and lower, I believe that I can see an  :Greek_Omicron:. Is the Saint Nicholas?  Which century?  Pogh_poor

A Virgin/St. Nicholas indeed. But I am afraid I have serious doubts about this seal's authenticity.

Gert, that was my thought about this "seal"too. I got the item at a very small price with the idea that it might be real. But in my opinion, the channels look false and it appears be too thin to have ever been used.  Pogh_poor
