Over the last few years I have been gathering a variety of
FEL TEMP REPARATIO coins. Along the way I have added quite a few from
Antioch which appeals to me stylistically. I am sort of working towards an
officina set but really am just picking examples up when I come across them.
This new coin is a case in point. I already have a
RIC VIII Antioch 132 (//ANH) but thought that this one was appealing enough, with enough minor differences for me to given another example a
home.
My new coin:-
Obv:– D N CONSTANTIVS
P F AVG, Pearl diademed, draped,
cuirassed,
bust right
Rev:–
FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Helmeted soldier to left,
shield on left
arm, spearing falling horseman;
shield on ground at right. Horseman is bearded and falls forward reaching towards emperor
Minted in
Antioch (Gamma _ //ANH). A.D. 350-355
Reference:-
RIC VIII,
Antioch 132.
5.93 gms. 23.33 mm.
180 degreesA quite well executed coin. Minor items to note are the double ring of dots on the emperor's
shield and the horseman reaches back and is grabbing the spear.
My previous example.
5.59 gms. 22.30 mm.
180 degrees.
There are obvious issues with the
flan which impact on the
reverse legend and emperor from about 11 o'clock to about 3 o'clock. Otherwise the coin is reasonably well struck. The horseman in this case has
his arm bent back towards him with
his hand turned towards
his face.
I won't bore you all with all my examples but I will share what are probably my best overall two coins of this
type alongside those above for comparison.
Another
RIC VIII Antioch 132 (but with //ANS)
And a
RIC VIII Antioch 135 (clutching rather than reaching
type with //ANB)
And a
Constantius Gallus that would be nice but for an
uneven strike.
Obv:– DN CONSTANTIVS
IVN NOB C, Bare,
bust draped and
cuirassed right
Rev:–
FEL TEMP REPARATIO, Soldier spearing fallen horseman, who is bare headed, reaching backwards
Minted in
