1st time help - late roman bronze - a Valens?
« on: December 02, 2019, 09:18:38 pm »
I have 4 coins that I am trying to ID.  Here is the first.  I have spent some time looking, and believe it is a Valens coin, with GLORIA ROMANORVM reverse, Thessalonian mint.  I'd like some help to be sure, and welcome any constructive comments.

The coin is 17mm at its widest point.  My scale measures grams, but this does not register, so the weight is unknown.

The soldier on the reverse is holding a laborum with a Chi Rho.

I hope this enough to go on, with the pictures.

If I've messed up, sorry!

Thanks, Greg

DN VALENS PF AVG /GLORIA ROMANORVM seems good to be. But I can’t read the mintmark from the picture, so your guess is as good as mine.

DN VALENTINI  ANVS PF AVG  could  be  possible.

AMICTUS, I can see that also as a possibility, thanks.
This is tricky - anyone know how to know the difference between Valentinian I and Valens?

Valens will have DN VALEN on the left art of the inscription.  Valentinian will have DN VALENTINI in smaller letters.  Yours is clearly Valentinian.

The mint mark looks to be TESB.
