Need help identifying Greek coin
« on: November 03, 2019, 05:16:56 am »
Hello, I would appreciate any help in trying to identify this coin.

I bought today a coin which I'm having some trouble trying to identify it. Google search and reverse image search didn't helped much.
The coin is most probably made from bronze, one side looks modern it has Greek inscriptions and the number 20, on the other side it looks ancient and represents a bearded charioteer.

My guess--and it is no more than a guess--is that it is a nineteenth century Greek church token.  During the nineteenth century at one point virtually all small-denomination coins disappeared from circulation and Greek churches in mainland Greece and Turkey issued tokens, much like during the American Civil War businesses issued tokens for much the same reason.  Most examples I have seen are struck on thin sheet brass, but this may be an exception.

Very interesting. The coin does indeed look like some sort of token. Thanks for pointing me in a direction, I will do some more research on these church tokens.
