Stroganoff Collection Catalog Book
« on: October 19, 2019, 05:04:17 pm »
Anyone able to point to a catalog, apparently of Greek coins, known as 'Stroganoff' ?  Don't know much about it except that coins in that book are frequently listed in other reference books.  In any case, it's like more than a century ago.  Maybe an auction catalog from the 19th century?

Thanks,

PtolemAE

This is a book about oriental coins, there are no Greek ones described:
https://archive.org/details/noticesurunecoll00ties/page/n3

But there are several works about items of the collection of "M. le comte S. Stroganoff" and the Stroganoff family, he even did write a numismatic article by himself. He had a large collection of objects of art, not coins alone: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergei_Grigoryevich_Stroganov

At least a part of the coin collection is now in the Hermitage in St. Petersburg: https://www.inc-cin.org/assets/pdf/articles/collections-hermitage.pdf

I did not find a special catalog about the Stroganoff coin collection, but some references to his collection in general.
Which references "listed in other reference books" do you exactly mean?

Thanks, Mary - is there a direct link to the ebook somewhere?  I'll do some tracking from here as well.

Got it thanks. Looks like Islamic coins. There is a book of Stroganoff's Egyptian antiquities also. Not easy to get but there is a copy in the US.

Try the ANS library. The third one on the catalogue list may be the one you seek?

https://donum.numismatics.org/cgi-bin/koha/opac-search.pl?q=Stroganoff

An interesting aside... the Stroganoff in question was apparently a descendant of Count Pavel Aleksandrovich Stroganoff after whom the Beef Stroganoff was named, in his honor, by his chef.

https://www.bonappetit.com/entertaining-style/trends-news/article/origin-of-beef-stroganoff

The count himself died of tuberculosis at the age of 43, somewhere near Copenhagen. His clan lived on in luxury well into the 19th century, and today they are survived by a vast art collection as well as a grand estate in St. Petersburg known as the Stroganoff Palace.

You can even visit the Stroganoff Palace if you so choose. It was nationalized in 1917 and became a part of the state's Russian Museum in 1990. Just don't arrive looking for any "authentic family recipe tips" from real Stroganoff family members. The last heiress to the Stroganoff dynasty, Countess Olga, died in 1837.

All historical inquiry is contingent and provisional, and our own prejudices will in due course come under scrutiny by our successors.

Thanks. The ones listed in these posts and the ANS library are the 'oriental' coins books.  There's another book of the Stroganoff Egyptian antiquities collection but only one reference to it in the USA at a library in Chicago.  Making some progress... There's a quote from the catalog in Svoronos which is what started this inquiry.
