Great article. I wonder what the odds are that it was Caligula's ring? It certainly would be great to know if it was. It would be amazing it survived all the centuries. Too bad it can't be carbon dated.

Quite the rock.  Carved from a single stone.  Art historians are referenced on other sites opining that the style is not right for the Julio-Claudian period.
The 18th Century collectior's attribution to Caligula is nearly a guarantee of inaccuracy!

That's a fantasy piece with artificial buzz around it:
- style is completely off for the period,
- plain rings made of stone were not very fashioned in Roman times,
- carved sapphire is extremely unusual

I did some serious research and it is confirmed that the famous ring was given to Gaius by his best friend and consul Incitatus during a party.

Incitatus was, of course, known for his exquisite taste, and the workmanship on the ring amply bears that out.

Was that Incitatus the horse or Incitatus the fool?

Clearly the horse, who, having no fingers, had no use for the ring himself.......
