Bruttium - Apollo looking for reference
« on: August 28, 2019, 09:24:01 pm »
I have not been able to find a reference of this coin ???:
Æ Tetrante
20 x 22 mm, 9.51 g
Bruttium, Rhegion, ca 260 or earlier - 215 BC (3rd century BC)

Obv.: Laureate Head of Apollo right; border of dots
Rev.: tripod with omphalos between legs; border of dots P H Γ I  at left/ NΩN at right

[LINKS REMOVED BY ADMIN]

but until now I have no reference for this exact type, although there have been suggestions of similar ones

Maybe someone can point me in the right direction?

Your help to find a reference is very much appreciated :)

Chris

Nice coin!  Welcome to Forum.

Looks like HNItaly 2543 but it's Apollo left whereas yours is right.

Thank you so much Jay GT4 for your welcome and of course for your info, which I do appreciate very much :-)

Have been registered at forumancientcoins for some time, so I thought I could post my message for help to attribute this coin.

Since on acsearch's coin Apollo's head is to the left, I don't know if  the same reference HNItaly 2543; SNG ANS 719 is also a reference for mine where Apollo's head is to the right? Maybe I could use HNItaly 2543 (var.), which is really a big step forward since I have been stuck trying to attribute it for a long time now.

Dear Chris, Jay, and Board,

Here are two examples in the ANS with the head of Apollo facing the "right" way:

http://numismatics.org/collection/1944.100.8048

http://numismatics.org/collection/1944.100.8049

...but with the ethnic arranged a bit differently.  Still a closer match than the previous coin.

Wow, that is a some handsome Sicilian indeed!  Hope this helps.

Best regards,

Yes!!!! Definitely much closer  :D

Thank you so very much Mark, now I have a reference for it. Will use SNG ANS 3.708-3.709 (var.).

I forgot that I have a catalog of coins from the national archaeological museum of Reggio Calabria.  I will check if your coin is in it.

Edit: Nope, only left.  None right.

Thank you so much Jay GT4 for checking the catalogue from the National Museum of Reggio Calabria.

At wildwinds there is the same type with monogram KP as the ones  found by Mark:

Will keep searching

Don't know if this could help: it has a note "Ex Numismatica Classica No. 41/ SFR ..." with the price my dad paid in the early 80's.

I think one can't write about prices on the discussion board, so I am leaving it out  :-\
