Holed coin of the day.
« on: August 04, 2019, 08:23:36 am »
A giant hole stopped others bidding for it. Personally I don't mind holes if they miss the portrait. It is part of the coins history, with the hole in this case being made in antiquity so the coin could be suspended, possibly as a pendant. Paulina is an empress that is hard to find, especially in nice condition, (other than the hole) so I was very pleased to land it.

DIVA PAULINA, (wife of Maximinus), issued by Maximinus to honour her, (A.D. 235-238), silver denarius, Rome mint, (3.14 g), (S.8400, RIC 2, RSC 2).

I agree.   It would be horrible to put a hole in an ancient coin in 2019, but you  may have a fine "medieval-ancient hybrid".  Many spectacular ancient coins were put in jewelry in centuries past, such as the chain of Imperial aurei in the Metropolitan Museum. The object has beauty and validity in itself.

Thanks everyone. Nice to see board members can look past the hole and see the quality of the rest of the coin!

Best regards,

Steve
