Please help with a Roman coin - two snakes perhaps?!
« on: August 14, 2019, 06:39:42 am »
Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I would need help please with the coin in the attached pics.
It is not yet in my possession so I cannot confirm the size and weight.
What I can distinguish from the reverse is 2 snakes? tried searching for this but could not find anything similar.
I apologize if this is something quite common but I have never seen this type before.

Probably Pautalia (end of legend fits)

https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=3089025

obverse legend is different, looks more like AV K C...

Thank you.
I thought it was from 4th century but nothing fits. I will try to search for Caracalla coins

Thank you, gentlemen.

When I get the coin I will check the size and perhaps weight.
I think I had no chance to identify this one alone.
Still not 100% sure - on the acsearch coin the legend is AV K MA ANTΩNEI and on mine it looks like AV K CA .... like shanxi  noticed, also the reverse doesn't seem the same? (I know it can differ a little for the same type of coin)

Obvers legend is probably AY K C ANTΩNINOC, like on this example from Pautalia with a different reverse.

Might be Varbanov 4977 (R4, this legend). Varbanov mentiones one snake, but looking at the pictures it might be only one. (no picture in Varbanov)
