Exceptional and rare Domitian Denarius from 85 A.D.
« on: July 25, 2019, 02:35:32 pm »
Hello everyone.

In the year 85 A.D. the mint of Rome produced its largest output during the reign of Domitian, with a great number of types in each metal and an high number of varieties.

This wonderful denarius, which should only be the fourth known (and probably the best, I dare to say), is a clear example of this, with the reverse legend arranged counterclockwise; this was something absolutely unusual in the period, while it was quite frequent in 81-82 A.D.).

For sure it is one of the top denarii in my own collection.

Congrats Alberto. That is a great addition to your collection. I really like the portraits on the denarii of 85. In my view they are exceptional.

This is a wonderful denarius. If it’s not too much to ask, I would be curious to see a picture of the collector’s ticket that goes with the coin.

I agree there were a large variety of types struck in 85, perhaps only rivalled by 88 with the Secular Games issues. But as far as quantity, surely any year in the late 80s or early 90s produced vastly more coinage than 85!

Nevertheless, excellent coin.

Thanks Dominic, here is the collector's ticket. Apparently the previous owner made contact with Ian Carradice reporting the coin.

Thanks David, you're certainly right about quantities.

A wonderful coin Alberto. The Aegis resting against the neck of Domitian shows the devotion the emperor must have had for Minerva-Athena. It is as if he wants something belonging to the Goddess to actually touch him- even if only as an effigy on a coin.

Best regards,

Steve
