Greek Bronze 23mm - Female head r / Seated Zeus l.
« on: July 05, 2019, 01:21:32 pm »
An academic colleague sent over this image of a bronze coin, likely from Asia minor, with a mm measurement scale at right.  Alas, weight not provided with the image.  Vertical inscriptions are only partly visible on both sides, and apparently some inscription (or date?) under the Zeus figure, in exergue, on the reverse as well, it's in need of identification.  Looks familiar so I suspect it will succumb quickly.  One thought from my friend is it might be a coin of Demetrius and Cleopatra Thea but I didn't spot it in Spaer.  Possibly just missed it glancing over many pages of plates.  But it might also be a city coin or other type

Thanks for your help.

From the legend ΕΠΙ ΓΑΙΟΥ ΠΑΠΙΡΙΟΥ ΚΑΡΒΩΝΟΣ you can read ΕΠΙ ΓΑΙ.. right and an ..PIO.. left  of Zeus, and parts of ΡΟΜΗ in ex

Looks right.  Worn vine leaves obscured that the obverse is Dionysos but clear on your exemplar.  Yes, I can read some of the letters like GAI but it seemed too little to be sure.  Thanks for the quick results.  Keep up the good work,

These coins minted under Papirius Carbo with Dionysos and Roma have been minted in Apameia, Bithynion, Nikaia, Prusa and Tion.

Bithynion: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b85617636
Nikaia: https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8555935j , https://gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/btv1b8555940v
Prusa: see link from Shanxi above
Tion: see Imhoof-Blumer, GM p. 589, 94

The specimen here seems to be not from Prusa but from Nikaia.

I couldn't read the ethnic, but comparing it with the examples shown, I think you are right.
