Another Vespasian dynastic sestertius
« on: June 07, 2019, 01:02:51 pm »
Hello everyone.

The coin that I'm uploading today it's not new, since it's been in my collection for over 15 years.

I thought it deserved a new photo, especially for its beautiful green patina.

The reverse is very close to that of David's example, in my opinion.

Kind regards

Alberto

It really looks like it says DES IT no DES II

You're absolutely right Tacitus, thanks for pointing it out!

My file was fifteen years old and I didn't check again carefully the legend.

I've corrected it now.

COS DES IT = designated consul for the second time.

A second consulship had been voted, but not yet entered into. Sort of like the U.S. president elect between election day and his swearing in in January.

Thanks Curtis.
Would this be one of the instances where the Consulship was only a month long or some other short period?  Or was this a year long term?  If year long, was there a period in between or was it in between his consulships?

Consulships were generally shorter than a full year under the empire, so that more senators could attain the honor of holding that office.
