Fascinating Robert, it reminds me of the Australian Aboriginal bark shield held by the British Museum that was collected in 1770 on Captain Cook’s First Voyage with HMS Endeavour. Perhaps bark shields were in common use in many places in the past- it is just that their organic nature means they are likely to decompose quickly, and so leave little trace in the archaeological record.
